Lemosho is ideal for climbers seeking a more private hiking experience. Although
the trail joins with the more popular Machame route on the third evening, the
first three days on the mountain are relatively quiet with few other trekking
groups on the trail. On the first day, arrive at Londorossi Gate at about 11am.
Spend about an hour at the gate while Topi Adventure registers your climb and
the porters and guides make final preparations. Please note that the arrival
time at the gate may vary depending on road conditions. <br />
After registering at the gate, drive to the trailhead and enjoy a picnic lunch
before starting the trek to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp. Pass through the rain
forests of Kilimanjaro viewing trees and birds along the way. Arrive at the
campsite in the late afternoon and relax for the rest of the day. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

Hike through the forest on day two for Kilimanjaro's moorland. This is the day
that you will enjoy the greatest variety of Kilimanjaro's wildflowers. When the
trail flattens out, you will have your first views of Kibo peak. After lunch,
you will climb the Shira Plateau, created when Kibo's lava flows filled up the
Shira crater. Stop at Shira 1 Camp, where you will relax for the rest of the

Although this up and down day ends with an elevation gain of only 110 meters,
by early afternoon you will have climbed 690 meters to a height of 4,530 meters
before beginning your descent to Barranco Camp. This day is crucial for
acclimatization. <br />
After breakfast, continue east on the Shira Plateau for two hours before
reaching the junction for Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue on through the
barren landscape for another thirty minutes before stopping for lunch. Shortly
after lunch, reach the highest point of the day before descending quickly to
Barranco Camp. From the high point, spot Lava Tower, a 300-foot lava formation
jutting out of the mountainside. Optional detour via Lava Tower. <br />
The descent to Barranco Camp will take you through a valley which is home to
many unusual plants including the Senecio Kilimanjari. Barranco Camp is
considered to be the most scenic campsite on the route. It is set in a canyon
among forests of Senecio Kilimanjai beneath the Heim glacier. From the
campsite, enjoy magnificent views of Mount Meru, Heim Glacier, Kibo's southern
face and the imposing Barranco Wall. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with an
hour and a half scramble up the Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the
day and in some places you may have to use your hands to pull your body up.
After reaching the top, hike through fairly level terrain before making a short
but steep descent into the greener Karanga River Valley. Karanga Camp is

After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view
several of Kibo's glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent
route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. During this day, hike by the Heim,
Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through alpine
desert with little vegetation, there are stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi
peaks along the way. Try to sleep as soon as you finish dinner as you will
awake before midnight for your summit ascent. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in
Africa. For the next six hours, hike by the light of your headlamp. The Machame
ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire six-day
trek. The going is steep and slow until you reach the crater rim at Stella
Point. <br />
The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as
hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes it more challenging.
The crater rim hike takes approximately forty-five minutes. Upon reaching
Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the
descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy breathtaking views of
the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. <br />
At Barafu Camp, eat brunch, drink lots of tea, and take a short break. You
still have another three to four hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" />

Tanzania bird watching boasts a large number of unusual 
and endemic bird species, and a list which nearly exceeds that of 
neighboring Kenya and almost equals Uganda. The country is truly a bird 
watcher's paradise.

<br /><br />Bird Watching in Tanzania is diverse and 
spectacular, over 1000 bird species has been recorded from water birds, 
forest birds, savannah birds to sea-birds. Below are a few of the major 
bird species found in country. If you are an ornithologist, you will 
also enjoy watching plentiful water birds including the African skimmer,
 kingfishers, goliath heron, and the rarely seen Pell’s fishing owl.

<br /><br />Bee-eater:    This specie is very colorful and 
nice to watch, usually perched on fences and trees. They feed on bees 
and wasps. There are about 4 types of bee-eaters commonly seen in 
Tanzania, they differentiate themselves by colors and size. commonly 
found in Lake Manyara, Highland forests, Usambara, Coastal areas and 
Southern Tanzania.

<br /><br />Crowned-Crane: a graceful, long legged bird, it 
looks like a stork and heron. Cranes are grassland dwelling birds. They 
are widely distributed in swamps, lake shores and grassland, commonly 
seen in pairs, small parties and flocks. Ngorongoro Crater harbour so 
many Carnes.

<br /><br />Fish Eagles are usually seen on the trees near 
the water bodies. Skilled at fish catching. Excellent place to see them:
 Rubondo Island National Park, Ruaha National Park near river banks has 
spectacular view of these birds.

<br /><br />Hoopee is a beautiful bird, commonly feeds on 
the ground. usually seen in small noisy flocks. Common in the northern 
Tanzania National parks reserve: Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire
 and Lake Manyara. Other birds: Fischer's lovebird, grey-rumped spur 
fowl and babbler-like rufous-tailed weaver.

<br /><br />Marabou stork, a scavenger normally seen with 
other vultures sharing a carcass. It has huge beak and the deep pink 
pouch swinging on the neck. Commonly see in almost all national parks 
and game reserves around the country.

<br /><br />Ostrich: The largest bird in the world. It is 
the most well-known bird, Ostrich is flightless. Mostly found in the 
northern plain, that is in Tarangire and the Serengeti, but can also be 
found in Mikumi in the South.

<br /><br />Parrots are forest dwelling birds. Although they
 have been documented in the mountain forest of Kilimanjaro and Meru, 
they are all over eastern arc mountains, especially Usambara and 
Udzungwa Mountains. Western forests such as the Mahale Mountains 
National Park and the Serengeti plains.

<br /><br />Secretary birds: Unusual looking bird of prey 
found on the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Ruaha National 
Park. It has a quill-like feather on its head, and it is so pompous when
 it stride. Secretary birds rarely fly and do so when absolutely 
necessary.

<br /><br />Other birds: Vorreaux's eagle owl, crested 
cranes, hornbill, whydahs, flycatchers, guinea fowl, woodpeckers, 
weavers, cattle egret and many types of vultures and scavengers; are all
 seen in Tanzania.   <br />

Although Zanzibar and its neighbouring tropical island of 
Pemba do not have reserve or park status, they are worth mentioning here
 for the aquatic life, some rare primates and a fascinating history. 
Zanzibar is a common post-safari destination that adds a relaxing, 
exotic element to a hectic holiday.

<br />
These islands lie at the top of Tanzania's Indian Ocean 
coastline, which over the centuries have been influenced by numerous 
cultures which have blended together to create the Zanzibar of today. 
The confusing mix originates from an African Asian combination created 
by a touch of Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese influences with some 
Dutch, Portuguese and English thrown in for good measure. Slaves and 
spices made these islands famous.

<br />
Shirazi Persians and Omani Arabs settled and ruled the 
Zanzibar Sultanate, which explains the Arab influences and Muslim 
religion which endures today. Heavily carved and studded Zanzibar doors 
relieve the plain exteriors of many houses, many of which are peeling 
and dishevelled. The Indian influence produced coloured glasswork and 
ornamental fretwork balconies and today Gujerati traders sell just about
 anything from cloves to curios. The English legacy is a number of solid
 imperial buildings occupying the more select parts of The Stone Town.

<br />
The islands conjure up everything one could want from a 
tropical escape. Spectacular beaches, simple fishing villages, relaxing 
resorts, silence and solitude if you wish or the hustle and bustle in 
the narrow streets of an ancient town.
   ANIMALS AND BIRDS
   <br />
Palm fringed white beaches epitomise a perfect tropical scene.
 Add to this warm water and an unspoiled marine environment with coral 
gardens inhabited by brightly coloured fish, and the picture is 
complete. The islands offer world class scuba diving or snorkelling and 
deep sea fishing in the Pemba and Mnemba channels

A visit to a spice farm will bring your sense of smell to life
 with pungent cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger and black 
pepper, along with such exotic fruits as tamarind, guava, mango, rose 
apple and bananas. The rare red colobus monkey might also be seen at 
some farms and particularly at Jozani Forest in the south of Zanzibar 
and in Pemba's natural forest.
   Changuu Island used to house wayward slaves, but hundred year old 
tortoises occupy the prison now.

SEASONS
   <br />
Lying within the tropics, Zanzibar experiences warm weather almost all the year. 
   <br />
Dry Season: The hottest month of the dry season is February 
with a maximum average daily temperature of 84°F (29°C). The southern 
hemisphere winter season is only slightly cooler here with a very 
pleasant average temperature of 70°F (21°C) in August. Rainy Season: 
There are two periods of rain, heaviest in March to May and lesser rains
 in October and November.

The wildebeest migration, like a discernible thread, embraces 
and connects the Serengeti's ecosystem much as it has done for at least 
two millions years. Every year, with some seasonally dictated variations
 in timing and scale, one million wildebeest leave the southern 
Serengeti's short grass plains in search of the grass and water they 
need to survive. 
   <br />
During their annual pilgrimage they will travel some 2.000 
miles devouring 4.000 tonnes of grass a day. A quarter of a million will
 be born, many will die.

<br />
January <br />

The migration is in the southeastern Serengeti on the short-grass 
plains after the short rains which have nurtured fresh grass. This month
 and December are the peak months for zebra birth.

<br />
February <br />

The short-grass plains are the main feeding ground for some two 
million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle. Predators lurk close by, feeding 
on the newborn. This is the main month for wildebeest calving.

<br />
March<br />
 
   Beginning of the long and heavy rains. Clouds, growing in 
intensity, appear from the south and occassional lightning illuminates 
the night sky. The short-grass plains' pastures are nearing exhaustion 
and the newborn can keep up with the herds.

<br />
April<br />

Heaviest rainy month. Wildebeest are almost evenly scattered on the short-grass plains.

Good forage still available but water begins to be a limited 
factor. Now the vast herds begin to coalesce with columns containing 
hundreds of thousands stretched over many km as they had across the 
woodland zones into the Western Corridor where new food and water has 
been generated by the rains around Grumeti.

<br />
June<br />
 
   Rains come to an end and the herds leave the black-cotton-soil 
plains, crossing the Grumeti River where many wildebeest drown every 
year providing food for the crocodiles who lurk at crossing points. In a
 normal year they will be in Seronera/Moru kopjes area.

<br />
July<br />
 
   The migration now heads northwest briefly leaving the park as they
 enter the Grumeti Controlled Area, with a small portion of the herd 
heading towards the Lobo area. Visitors should note that morning 
temperatures have fallen sharply.

<br />
August <br />

The migration and the ever-attendant predators trailing now cross 
the Ikorongo controlled Area. The various branches of the migration 
begin to meet up. The migration in a normal year should now be in the 
northern Serengeti and entering Maasai Mara. It is still cold in the 
mornings.

<br />
September<br />
 
   The migration has now entered Kenya's Maasai Mara Game Reserve 
just across the northern border from the Serengeti. Temperatures begin 
to rise and the skies are blue by day.

<br />
October <br />

This is the driest month in the Serengeti with the bulk of the 
animals briefly absent in the Maasai Mara Game Reserve where there is 
always plentiful water and better grazing for the plains animals at this
 time of year.

<br />
November<br />
 
   As if sensing the oncoming short rains with clouds gathering in 
the sky, the migration begins its trek back home to the Serengeti. Flame
 trees are beginning to blossom and migrant birds start to arrive.

<br />
December <br />

The migration increases its pace as it heads towards Serengeti's 
southern plains where the short rains are generating the grass. It 
follows the Loliondo boundary of the park and the zebra begin to give

   Africa is a land of diverse cultures and religions. 
Somewhat, the continent is a complex place which is sometimes hard to 
understand. It is because of this diversity and assortment of the 
cultures that many tourists and visitors the world over travel to Africa
 to explore it themselves.
   <br />

The African cultures include a wide variety of religious values 
and ideals. Today, Africa is seen as a conglomeration of many distinct 
cultures and religion that is truly amazing in itself. Each dynasty or 
rule has introduced something new and it is because of the ability of 
African culture to assimilate all these changes in such a way that it 
will look as if they are already a part of the existing cultures and 
traditions.
   <br />

Traditional Maasai Life; cultural safaris: Those 
wishing to incorporate an insightful cultural element into their safari 
may wish to include a day spent with the Maasai people close to Lake 
Manyara, as well as a day with the Hadzabe.
   <br />

Topi Adventure has a zero-impact camp site on a hill overlooking 
Lake Manyara and within easy reach of several Maasai communities that 
still observe traditional subsistence lifestyles. A full day spent with 
the Maasai will usually involve a walking safari, beginning from our 
campsite, into the Losimingur Hills, to the north of Manyara.
   <br />

The walk will usually be led by a local Maasai guide with 
translation being assisted by your safari guide. Where possible, we aim 
to ensure that the local Maasai guide is not merely a professional group
 leader who has migrated away from village life into town to learn 
English and commerce, but is actually an active member of one of the 
nearby local communities, someone who still supports his community by 
means of the techniques that he will be revealing to you.
   <br />

Walking through the hills with the Maasai is fascinating, 
particularly if visitors aim to take full advantage of their local 
guide’s knowledge and to frequently pause and question him. A good 
dialogue will provide some amazing insights as to how the Maasai derive 
medicines from the many varied plants; how Maasai social life is ordered
 by age and what are the respective duties of each group; how the Maasai
 hold to the belief that all cattle are properly theirs by divine right 
and how the Morani should be tasked with marauding neighbouring tribes 
and ‘stealing back’ these cows; how such missions often sadly cause the 
death of several participants; and a great deal more that - if one is 
prepared to delve deeply - will reveal a worldview and offer 
perspectives that contrast very greatly with those of home.   <br />
